Nobody wants to feel condescended to. 

It's a basic human want. We're all adults who have worked hard to be here, and we don't deserve to feel like people don't take that seriously. We all deserve a fundamental level of respect from everyone we deal with, especially in job interview settings. It doesn't matter if you're applying for an entry-level position; you should demand fair treatment from everyone who comes your way. After all, you're doing them a favor by being willing to share your talents. The very least they can give you in return is the time of day. But this isn't always what happens, and it's the unfortunate truth that recruiters will sometimes fluff up their offerings to seem more attractive, and then pull the rug at the last minute. This puts entry-level job seekers in a tough situation and makes them feel like they're doing something wrong when really they're not.

    I've been job hunting for months now, and after dealing with endless ghosting, you start getting genuinely desperate when an interview finally lands on your calendar. I got a call scheduled for a mid-level role at a company that seemed decent on paper. I researched them, prepped my answers, logged onto the video call early, and we started chatting.

  • That's what happened here, where a person with reasonable salary expectations had a recruiter laugh in their face. It's never right to scoff in someone's face, even if they deserve it. We should all be treating each other with a baseline level of respect at all times, especially if we want people to work for our company. No company is so sought-after that they have earned the right to treat interviewees poorly. It's also right to acknowledge just how much salary matters when applying to jobs. It's one thing to dwell on it to the detriment of your interview. It's another thing to pretend like it doesn't matter and expect people to work for you just out of the kindness of their hearts. So when salary negotiations arise, it's important to treat them with the utmost care. This is people's livelihoods after all, not just an afterthought.   • Tyrilean It depends. Do you consider working in a toxic for sh pay better than unemployment? Sometimes you gotta deal with it to eat. Depending on how desperate I was, I might've played ball and continued my search, and left without notice when a better opportunity came along (and left this job off my resume).

  • jdiddy_ub There are very few companies in the world where working there is a real privilege...I'm guessing this isn't one of them. There's nothing wrong with ending a call/meeting if your numbers do not align. It's a waste of both people's time to continue if you know it's not going to work. The issue is that you are a bit uncertain.

It looks to me like they didn't fit your requirements and you chose to not move them forward... look at it that way and keep moving otherwise you can second guess yourself to no end and that can carry to the next interview, IMO
